Laura Aguilar

1959–2018

A woman wearing a hat and holding a camera stands for a photo in the desert

Laura Aguilar was a photographer. With her images, she centralized large bodies, queer people, and people of color. Her photography, as much as an exploration of her own journey through disability, mental health, and sexual identity, focused on the process through which gender, racialization, culture, and sexuality are embodied. Her photography has been indispensable to the visualization and documentation of Chicano/a/x identities. The NMMA hosted her retrospective, Laura Aguilar: Show and Tell in 2019.
