Arreguin’s invention of a nature mythology that features guardian animals and spectral masks led him to realize a potent combination of landscape and portraiture. A comparable idea lies behind the artist’s self-portraits in which his own features coalesce from a tangle of tropical growth. Considering the brilliance of his jungle pictures, he has surely earned the right to represent himself as one of the forest's protectors.
