Imágenes del espíritu: Photographs by Graciela Iturbide

May 21 – August 29, 1999

Graciela Iturbide has engaged in the workday life and seasonal celebrations of communities throughout Mexico, exploring ways to extend the scope of the “objective” photograph. Her images are powerful because they underline the difference between belonging and citizenship. She is passionately interested in the struggle of individuals, using her photography to examine the rifts that exist within humans and outside in the world. Traveling exhibition venues: The William Benton Museum of Art of the University of Connecticut, Mexican Fine Arts Center Museum, Chicago, The National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, D.C. and the Museum of Fine Arts, Santa Fe.
