Open Access Behind the Scenes of the Permanent Collection

February 16 – July 28, 2019

Did you ever wonder what goes on beyond those “Staff Only” signs? This living exhibit will provide a rare behind-the-scenes glimpse of what our Museum’s Permanent Collection professional staff does and why we wear those white gloves. Since our earliest accession in 1987, which is a serigraph by Ester Hernández, the NMMA’s Permanent Collection has grown to over 10,000 unique artistic creations, some with 100s of individual components. The collection categories now include: Arte Popular (Folk Art), Carlos Cortez Archives, Drawings, Ephemera / Memorabilia, Installations, Paintings / Mixed Media, Photography, Posters, Pre-Cuauhtémoc Artifacts, Prints, Sculpture, Textiles / Outfits and, most recently Digital Media.

We are thankful for the generous support provided by the Phillip and Edith Leonian Foundation which enabled us to hire additional staff to assist in the organization and implementation of this exhibit.
